Lies? When Do They Stop?

Dishonesty and lies are nothing new to politics, but when do we stop and take a serious look at the accusations that continue to be hurled at Barack Obama day after day after day? When do we say enough is enough? During the Bush campaign in 2000 the lies were clever; you had to really play with the numbers to realize how badly we were being conned. But today with most of us pretty computer savvy – I include myself in that and I’m older than John McCain – there’s very little you can’t disprove in a matter of minutes and yet they keep saying the same things over and over and over again. Carl Rove is behind much of this and how much longer are we going to listen to him? Haven’t we learned anything during the last eight years?

This whole thing about the Bridge to Nowhere -- how many have taken a few minutes to find out what Palin’s real take on that was and just when she decided to cancel the project and just how did she still come out ahead financially? So much for her stand against wasteful spending.

Then there’s the alleged story of Obama’s advocating kindergarten sex-ed – how many have looked into what that was really all about? And then there’s the “lipstick on a pig” and they’re claiming it was a sexist remark. Of course, there is a televised shot of McCain using the same statement, but no one’s focused on that one.

So, when do we stop listening to the media, when do we start doing our own research, when do we try to find answers for ourselves? Well, folks, we better get with it and soon. You think the Bush-Cheney era was bad? To quote Paul Krugman of the New York Times, “if the way John McCain and Sarah Palin are campaigning is any indication, it would be much, much worse.”

More False Claims

These are some of the false comments the McCain campaign is making that were passed on to me by a visitor to my site, I thought they were worth posting so more people will be able to read them.

The McCain-Palin campaign has released a new TV ad that distorts quotes from the Obama campaign. It takes words out of context to make it sound as though the Democratic ticket is belittling Palin:The ad says "they said she was doing 'what she was told.' " But the Obama adviser who's being quoted didn't accuse Palin of meekly following orders. What he actually said is that she made a false claim about Obama's legislative record and added, "maybe that's what she was told."

It says "they lashed out at Sarah Palin; dismissed her as 'good looking,' " But "they" didn't lash out at all. Obama – who is the one pictured – didn't say anything like that. The only one the McCain campaign quotes is Obama's running mate, Biden, and he actually offered the remark as a compliment. Biden said the "obvious" difference between Palin and himself is "she's good looking."

The ad says Obama was "disrespectful" when he accused Palin of "lying" about her record. But the truth is Palin's claim to have "said no" to the "bridge to nowhere" is indeed a dubious one, as we and many have pointed out.
